Hospitals coming to Clemmons and Advance NC and maybe Mocksville

Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and Novant Health Inc. announced today they had reached agreement that could result, over time, in construction of small community-based hospitals in Clemmons, Advance and Mocksville.

The surprise element also announced is that Wake Forest Baptist will be allowed not just to build a medical complex in eastern Davie County (Advance), but also could pursue state approval of a 25-bed critical access care hospital in Mocksville to replace Davie County Hospital.

Its plan to build a hospital in Advance, however, will start out with just a medical center offering diagnostic imaging, outpatient surgery and related services and physician practices.

The agreement with Novant stipulates that Wake Forest Baptist can only build a 50-bed acute care addition to the medical complex in 2017 or later. The same time-frame holds true for Novant offering in-patient beds in Clemmons.

The Davie complex will not include a birthing center, which Wake Forest Baptist had been pursuing separately to state officials, who had turned down two earlier proposals with such birthing centers. Novant, at its Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, performs the majority of births in the region.

Novant, meanwhile, can move forward with plans for its 50-bed hospital in Clemmons off Harper Road, for which it received tentative state approval last year. Wake Forest Baptist had appealed that ruling, but will drop its opposition.

The systems said they had received approval of their agreement from the N.C. Division of Health Service Regulation.
